After almost 350 years the owner of The Antiquarian Scientist, Raymond V. Giordano, announced the discovery in Catalogue 33,
two states of the first edition of Huygens' famous book on the planet
Saturn. The first state has a correction of a misprinting of an
engraving of the planet that is upside down by the mounting of a
correct image over the misprinted one. The second state was printed
error-free. Only two copies of the rare first state were located in
public and private collections.
The error in the first state was a reuse of the image on page 11
without the appropriate inversion. Consequently, the related text for
the engraving on page 18 did not match, and thus needed to be
corrected. This was done by mounting another copy precisely over the
engraving on page 18 in the proper orientation.
Right is the engraving on page 18 from a copy of the book in the correct second state.
The Smithsonian Institution's website for Christiaan Huygens Systema Saturnia acknowledged and documented Raymond V. Giordano's discovery. Click here to see Ronald Brashear's Introduction and scroll to the last paragraph for relevant discussion.

November 2008 - Huygens Revelations Update
To date some two dozen copies in both public and private collections have been examined and still only two copies of the first state have surfaced.
A computer analysis revealed that without a doubt that the engraving
from page 11 was indeed reused on page 18 without the proper inversion
in the first state.
Right is the engraving on page 11 that was reused on page 18.
